Spinning Top

After creating the pen and string drawing, I became interested in making work where I don't have full control of the process and outcome of the work. I found a small piece of wood in a circular shape with a hole in the centre. I came up with the idea to make a spinning top from this piece of wood by attaching a pen to the centre. I was impressed with the outcome and how this simple object created such interesting works.

This is the spinning top I made using the wood and a small sharpie.

These are some of the outcomes of the spinning top drawings. The spinning top itself reminds me of a tornado and how it can spin out of control, some of the patterns even look like tornado's  Other marks have created swirling and flower-like patterns.
I decided to create another pen and string drawing but this time in a larger scale.

I realised by using the string attached to the pen I was taking away a lot of  the control I had to create this drawing. Although I was able to control the pen slightly by moving my arm, each mark on the page was different and hit the page in a lot of different places, some lines overlapped especially near the centre and gradually become more dispersed near the edges.
