"Space is the breath of art" - Frank Lloyd Wright
Interacting With Negative Space

As I was researching and exploring negative space I came across this video which i found interesting. This installation which allows the spectator to explore the audiovisual potentials of negative spaces was created by Golan Levin who is an American new media artist.
After looking at Rachel Whiteread's works particularly 'House Study (Grove Road) 1992' I wanted to experiment and show how negative or blank spaces can effect an image and make the spectator question and think about what was originally in that space. I experimented with negative space using images from magazines.

I used white paint to blank out the figure of the girl
creating negative space.

Rachel Whiteread is a British contemporary sculptor who very effectively explores the theme of space.

'House'
This is one of Whiteread's sculptures titled 'House'. It is a life-size replica of a 3 storey end of terrace Victorian house. It was made by filling the space inside the house with liquid concrete and then removing the outer mold which was the house itself...Whiteread creatively captured the space inside the house and made it into a solid sculpture trapping the lives and memories of people who lived there. I found this work intriguing, how she is able to make the invisible become visible and create interesting sculptures.

This is another one of Whitereads works i found interesting. By blanking out and creating negative space makes the spectator question what was there. Rachel Whitereads work has inspired me to think about negative space and also how removing/blanking part of an image can alter that image.

To Sense my Space is the title for the project I am beginning to generate ideas for. As I am exploring and experimenting with different ideas I am also researching artists which I find interesting and may also relate to my project.
