Rachel Whiteread

Rachel Whiteread is a British contemporary sculptor who very effectively explores the theme of space.

'House'
This is one of Whiteread's sculptures titled 'House'. It is a life-size replica of a 3 storey end of terrace Victorian house. It was made by filling the space inside the house with liquid concrete and then removing the outer mold which was the house itself...Whiteread creatively captured the space inside the house and made it into a solid sculpture trapping the lives and memories of people who lived there. I found this work intriguing, how she is able to make the invisible become visible and create interesting sculptures.

House Study (Grove Road) 1992
This is another one of Whitereads works i found interesting. By blanking out and creating negative space makes the spectator question what was there. Rachel Whitereads work has inspired me to think about negative space and also how removing/blanking part of an image can alter that image.
