The Perfect Setting!

So here it is my final poster! For my first attempt at creating a poster and working on photoshop I am really happy with the result. (I did make some minor adjustments after this like changing font size but this is basically what it looks like)

Poster Time!

So now after writing on lots of knives and forks I have a general idea of what I want on my poster, I tried to figure out a way to display these knives and forks so I started to photograph them in lots of different ways to hopefully come up with the perfect solution. After numerous attempts of arranging and rearranging I think I finally came up with a way tho photograph them perfectly.

Since knives and forks are associated with mealtimes and food, I came up with the idea of arranging the knives and forks so they resemble a table setting (plate with knife and fork)

This is how it turned out. This is the starting point for my poster and still needs to be worked on. I put it on a solid black background so it could easily be changed in Photoshop if needed.

So I had very little experience with working with photoshop before this project but I learned so much about it during this project. I opened this photo on Photoshop and got to work on it.

I isolated the knives and forks and put them on a different colour background so they would stand out and become the focus of my poster.

Food Food Food!

I did a sketch on a page, I created the shape of a plastic knife and fork by using lots of words related to food and eating. I liked the idea of incorporating words into my design so I tried to work with this some more.

Instead of having the words on paper I decided to actually write some on real plastic knives and forks

I thought the combination of text and the plastic knife and fork looked good so I began to write on more. The project kind of turned into me documenting every food I ate throughout the weeks. Almost like a food diary but on knives and forks instead.

Here are some photos of the plastic knives and forks I wrote on.

Here are some thumbnail sketches I did throughout the week.

Celebration of Everyday Objects!

Poster Project!
So we are starting a new project and I'm excited about this one. Everyone in the class was given an everyday object and our aim is to celebrate that object and everything about it. My object is a plastic knife and fork. I have to come up with lots of ideas relating to this objects and finish up with a poster celebrating the plastic knife and fork.

First I did a brainstorm and put down everything I could think of that related to the plastic knife and fork: its advantages, disadvantages, uses etc.

After I looked up the history of the plastic knife and fork and found out things like when it was invented, where and by who was it invented.

Finished

After a long week of trying to get materials and assembling my piece my letter-form is finally finished. Unfortunately I have no photographs of my piece on its own but here is a photo of the complete alphabet of letterforms created by our first year Graphic Design class. It looks very impressive when everyone's pieces are together.

This is my Letterform hanging. The wire blends into the surroundings in the background so you cant see it perfectly in this photo but you can get the general idea of how it looks.

These are the exhibited pieces on display in college.

Idea

I did this page of thumbnail sketches which I really like. I really want to find a way to make something like this.

I like the idea of having the letter E entangled in some type of material between to flat pieces of another material which I think would give it better shape and structure.

I think wire would be a good material to entangle the E in and possibly perspex for the top and the bottom. To see if this would work i made a small prototype using cheaper materials as perspex is quiet expensive.

I used acetate punched holes in it and then used black wire.

I like how this looks so now I am going to push the idea further and increase the scale.

Time to start Entangling

moving away from drawing on paper I began to physically entangle things.

Entangling cut out paper letter 'E's

Entangling string and wire

Entangling red and black wire. I think this looks the best out of the things I have entangled so far.

Time for a Change

So Erosion just wasn't really working out, I found myself coming to a stop and lacking in new ideas so it was back to the drawing board and time to start brainstorming again. I came up with another word: Entangle which I hope I will have more success with. Entangle means to involve (someone) in difficulties or complicated circumstances, which I think sums up the State of the Nation today.

This is my brainstorm and some pages of thumbnail sketches I did to get some of my ideas onto paper.

I'll take it

Rooting through skips is something I've got used to since starting art college because you'll never know what little treasures you could find. I found these cardboard box 'things' in the recycling and photographed them in different ways to create the letter E, they also relate to my word because of the way they look almost like they are eroding.

Off the page

I decided to experiment with my word by doing some 3D work. I found some blocks of wood in the materials store in college and thought I could work with them somehow, this is what I did. I tried to make the  e look like it had been eroded off

Erosion

I began to experiment with the word erosion which means the gradual destruction or diminution of something. I started off with some 2D work on paper and exploring some typefaces to find one which could possibly work well to portray the word erosion.

Time to get stuck in..

So after the first day of Viscom I'm really excited and cant wait to get to work. We were given our first two briefs, the first one is going to be an ongoing brief until we finish up for summer and that is we have to keep a visual journal/sketchbook, this i'm quite excited about.
The second one is a 3 week brief, we were each given a letter from the alphabet and using that letter we then have to design letterform under the theme 'State of the Nation'.
My letter is 'E' and I began to brainstorm words beginning with 'e' keeping the theme 'state of the nation' in mind.

Some words that came to mind:

Economy, Educate, Education, Employment, Earn, Earnings, Europe, Economic, Exchange, Endless, Empty, Equality, Expense, Exceed, Enemy, Extra, Erase, Exit, Enough, Effort, Endeavor, Erode, Emphasize, Experience, Eejits, Eliminate, Effect, Euro.

These are just some of the words I came up with. Out of the words I brainstormed I thought Erode sounded like a good word, because the country is breaking apart and deteriorating.

Got Viscom!!

So after doing 2 weeks each of fashion design, printmaking and visual communications it was finally time to decide what I wanted to study for the next few years at LSAD, the competition was tough and there was only a certain amount of spaces in each discipline so you can imagine how happy I was when I saw my name on the list saying I got my first choice ... Viscom

Drypoint

First I decided to do a dry point of one of my images because I think it contained interesting shapes I could work with.

Here is one of the first prints I produced! I am quite happy with the outcome but I think there is something missing so I might try combining it next with a monoprint

To capture the sense of movement in urban areas I took some more photos around my town.
I took them in the car

Urban

The theme for the printmaking elective is urban and before we started we had to have photos which we felt related to the urban theme. The theme is quite broad so before I started taking new photos I looked through old photos on my laptop to help me chose the direction I wanted to go with the project.

I found these photos which were taken at a theme park, I liked the shapes and forms they create. There is also a sense of movement in these photos so I am going to try and take more photos which represent movement in urban space.
